The Denver Voice is a monthly street newspaper, distributed throughout the metro area by Voice vendors. The Voice is devoted to the homeless and impoverished communities of Denver, and we are always looking for new voices to be represented in our paper.

Our monthly distribution is 12,000.

What We’re Looking For

When selecting featured writers or artists for our issues, we are interested in stories that explore what it means to be a part of the homeless, disenfranchised, marginalized or poverty-stricken communities of Denver. We want to create a dialogue among all members of the Denver community by offering compelling stories that educate and engage our readers. We seek to represent a diverse group of contributors from all facets of life in our paper.

How to Start

If you are interested in having your work published in the Denver Voice, the first step is to look at our past issues. This will give you an idea of what subjects we write about, how we structure our paper and what types of voices and styles we have featured in the past.

Written submissions

There is a variety of areas in which writers can contribute: news briefs (250-500 words), organization and personal profiles (800-1,000 words), and feature articles (2,000-2,500 words). We also publish first person narratives and poetry.

After reading through our paper, you should submit a written query letter, clearly summarizing your story ideas and explaining how and why you could bring that story to our readers. If available, please provide any previously published writing samples. When submitting your query, it is important that you give us specific details about your story ideas so that we can fully consider and conceptualize your proposed story.

You can submit your query letter to: submissions@denvervoice.org, or by mail to:

Denver Voice
Attn: Editor
999 18th St, Suite 1440
Denver, CO 80202

If we are interested, we will contact you, so please include your name, phone number, street address and e-mail address with your query letter. If we choose to publish your story, we pay 20 cents a word after your story has been published; however, if you don’t need the money, you are welcome to donate your submission if we choose to publish it.

Thank you for your interest in writing for the Denver Voice.

Art and photography submissions

In addition to written work, we also accept art and photography submissions. We are most interested in documentary work but are also looking for unique artistic perspectives that relate to issues impacting marginalized communities.

You may e-mail low resolution images for review to submissions@denvervoice.org. If we select your work for publication, we will ask you to send us high resolution images, saved in an uncompressed TIFF format at 300 dpi or higher, on a CD or DVD. We ask published artists to donate their work to the paper if possible. If you are not in a position to donate your work please inquire about compensation.

Alternatively, you can send hard copies of photographs and art work to:

Denver Voice
Attn: Art Department
999 18th St, Suite 1440
Denver, CO 80202

Hard copies will not be returned without a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please be sure to provide us with your name, phone number, street address and e-mail address so we can contact you.

We look forward to reviewing your work.
