A Note from the Executive Director

Hello! My name is Herb Angle, Jr., the new Executive Director of the Denver VOICE newsmagazine. Like all non-profits, we struggle to make ends meet each month. We have a dedicated staff that works here because they believe that providing a quality product that creates a job for a homeless person is a worthy effort. We provide this paper to homeless vendors for $.25 and have done so since 2006 in order to ensure that they can earn enough money vending the paper to increase their chances of renting a decent place to reside.

The problem with this equation is the remaining $.75 of the cost of producing the papers. We walk a tight rope every month to produce a product critical to the survival of Denver’s homeless. We have several board members who contribute considerable funds each month to help keep us afloat, but we’ve grown so much that their funds alone can’t sustain the project. Therefore, we must reach out to our donors—the people who support Denver VOICE vendors every month and know how important this paper is.

Director's Note

By Amelia Patterson

Four years ago I sat in a classroom earning my master’s degree in journalism and little did I know that I was about to dive into the world of the Denver VOICE, which would consume the next four years of my life. As young journalists, most of us just hope to be published—rarely does one get the opportunity to start or even aspire to create a paper and then provide jobs for over 2,500 people experiencing homelessness. Wrapped up in those four years is an entire spectrum of life: the thrills of winning awards both locally and nationally, the thrills of helping someone work their way off the streets and witnessing the remarkable relationships that have developed between our readers and vendors. We have been to weddings and births and too many funerals.

2010 was another record-breaking year for the VOICE, and we want to thank everyone who helped us along the way. In August we were in the red, struggling to find the funds to keep our vendors in papers and our papers in print. I guess all conflict comes with resolution; non-profit management is no exception. Thanks to our avid fans, loyal readers and the hard work of our benefactors, we managed to pull out of the red and we’re back in the black as of mid-December. We have turned a corner, but we have a lot of hard work ahead.

A particular thanks goes to two Denver businesses that helped us immensely by generously hosting fundraisers for us. The law firm Ridley, McGreevy, Winocur & Weisz held their annual Parade of Lights holiday party in our honor, raising nearly $1,000 in an evening for the paper. Shortly after, Marlowe’s closed their restaurant for an evening and hosted a year-end celebration for us with an amazing spread of food and wine. They raised $14,000 for us that night!

Our annual budget is $300,000, and with that money our vendors collectively earn $360,000 or more each year. We put more money into the community than it costs us to operate.

In 2010, our vendors broke their sales records yet again. With your help, we distributed nearly 16,700 papers in September, our highest sales yet. Vendors report earning an average of $2 per paper, so in September you helped put more than $33,000 directly into the hands of the poorest members of our community.

We’ve also continued to sharpen our journalism throughout the year, providing you a combination of intelligent local journalism and literary journalism from around the globe. Our reports included direct coverage of the worst oil spill in history from renowned photojournalist Zoriah Miller, as well as coverage of critical regional and local issues. We were lucky to bring on a few more talented local freelance reporters, giving us the ability to bring you more Colorado news more frequently.

In 2011, we’re going to build on the foundation you have helped to fund. We’re becoming even more locally focused, and plan to create a “community page,” a section of the paper dedicated to exploring your local community. From significant organizations to individuals working to improve our city and state, the community page will educate readers about what’s happening and how you can be involved.

Once again, we’re grateful for all of your support and to your commitment while we’ve grown and gone through changes. Please help our vendors stay in business throughout 2011 by continuing to buy a paper each month. Your support is a crucial part of helping people work their way out of homelessness.

Director's Note

In this kind of economy it can be overwhelming —all the people and organizations asking for help, and the need is real. The Denver VOICE provides an opportunity for people to work and it may be a drop in the bucket compared to all the people who need jobs, but for the folks who are a part of this it can be transformative and enriching.

As the executive director I can get obsessed with money and that is because I am determined to keep this ship afloat. It is also the most mind-boggling investment that I can think of—for the five full time employees that we have at the Denver VOICE, we are able to provide 1000 jobs each year. That is a multiplying factor of 200!

In mid-October we hosted a Comedy Show at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret and we were thrilled to raise $42,000! It was a big boost and we have enough funds to get us nearly through the end of December. We haven’t had a second to rest and are working hard to push that run-out-of-money date further and further out. We are reaching out to you and members of the business community to support the Denver VOICE because even a small investment can go so very far. For $300 you can provide a job for an entire year—that is less than a dollar a day. It doesn’t take someone like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates to make a real difference here at the Denver VOICE. Imagine if you gave just one day of your wages and imagine if that was matched by another generous donor and just imagine how many jobs you would provide! Think about it.

Right now we have a very generous donor who is able and proud to support the Denver VOICE and will match individual donations up to $100,000 to keep our doors open for this year and into the next. Oh, and by the way if you are Nuggets fan we have amazing deals on tickets for two up coming games—see page five for information on how you can get tickets.

In many respects the Denver VOICE is about helping yourself. In the end, our vendors are doing it themselves. They are getting after it and making things happen. This year alone 20 of our vendors have worked their way off the streets and that is no small feat. None of this would happen without people like you, one dollar at a time. More often than not it isn’t just about getting a paper, it’s about the relationships that are created with you and the vendor. We may not be able to take everyone off the unemployment rolls, but for those who do work for us it can be life changing.

We want to start this month with a resounding “THANK YOU.” Everyone at the VOICE, our vendors and our staff, are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support you gave us last month. Throughout the year, VOICE readers are extremely supportive and involved, but the past month has been extraordinary. We still have a long way to go and we still need your help.

In August we started a major fundraising drive, with a need to raise $68,000 by the end of the year to keep the VOICE alive. Your generosity has helped us nock that down to $61,000.  In one month, supporters have given $7,000; if we can get that to $15,000 then we have a donor who will match that amount!
