Salary: $1,000/month

Time: Part time, 20 hour weeks, flexible

Work: From home or office

Job description: Oversees the content, design and publication of each monthly issue. Manages a group of volunteers, interns and freelancers, the graphic designer and other editorial staff as needed (copy editors, research assistants, production staff). Writes, edits, proofreads, copy edits and fact checks all articles and promotional documents related to the organization. Plans and prepares stories for print, assigns work, ensures consistency of product, develops new content areas and ideas for the paper, ensures accuracy of product.

 

Necessary Duties:

Work with Outside Individuals

  • Develop story ideas with writers: This consists of meeting with writers individually to build their story concepts out.
  • Assign stories to writers: Editor develops content ideas on his/her own and assigns the stories out to writers as needed. 
  • Help writers find sources/manage research: If a story is lacking certain angles of coverage, editor needs to find sources to pass off to writers, and often start their research process by providing them with some initial ideas.
  • Work with advertising sales reps in partnership with the director.

Work with Paper  

  • Determine content for each month’s paper: Think through story ideas for the upcoming months, and ensure each edition of the paper has a broad enough range of topics, or in the case of thematic issues, ensuring each story fits with the others. 
  • Coordinate Layout: Each month review a shipping list and determine art to be made in house, and assign photo shoots and illustrations to outside freelancers. Also coordinate ad placement, content for in-house ads, sidebars, graphics, etc.
  • Read, listen, watch and stay on top of local and national news trends
  • Blogs: updates a Denver VOICE blog with content relating to homelessness and local interest pieces. 
  • Edit content: ensure that each story has right number of sources, appropriate balance of sources, accurate information; ensure that the story is compelling, has a narrative with primary sources (first person accounts), is timely or unique, etc.
  • Conduct interviews: find sources, research topic, interview subjects, etc.
  • Write articles: write feature and short format news articles.
  • Improve paper: Develop new content areas as needed.
  • Respond to Public: When we get feedback, positive or negative, editor talks to readers and the public about what is being done to maintain interest in the product.
  • Facilitate print production: coordinate production schedule with printer and graphic designer, coordinate delivery of paper, oversee paper print quality each month and ensure product is correct
  • Manage Website: Ensure that website is updated each month in conjunction with the director. Upload article content and coordinate with director on updating home page and other pages each month.
  • Meet with the VOICE staff monthly.
  • Help staff implement plans: Work with all staff to promote events and other campaigns and efforts in the paper, online and through social media.
  • Work with interns: to help them write, research and develop their editorial skills.

Optional Duties 

  • Outreach: Network with other organizations, including the media, to generate interest in the Denver VOICE in the community.
  • Vendor Relations: Get to know/meet our vendors whenever possible, preferably at the monthly vendor meeting (Saturdays).
  • Fundraising: Attend fundraising and other VOICE related events as a volunteer.
  • Board relations: Attend monthly board meetings as needed. 

Qualifications:

  • Degree in communications/journalism
  • 2-3 years experience as published writer (school publications do count)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and access to the software
  • Experience in website updates through content management sites like Wordpress, Tumblr
  • Ideally experience working with a printer
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines

This job does entail flexibility in duties. We’re a small nonprofit and want a jack-of-all-trades who is going to work on the paper, help develop our content but also can step in to help with big fundraising projects as long as your work-week hours are respected.

ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVES

The Denver VOICE is looking for persons interested in selling advertisements for the Denver VOICE newspaper.

Position is flexible -- you work when you can and from home, with opportunities to use office space/phone as necessary. There is no base compensation, but a commission of 40% is provided. More information on our ad rates and program are available on our ad kit here

Ideal candidate will have experience with sales, or the passion and drive to be a self-starter and motivator.
